The latest expectations for the hospitality sector

Although the second lockdown has ended and we are back into the 3-tier system, it is important for businesses to plan ahead. As a business in the hospitality sector, you will have already had to make various changes to the everyday running of your pub, bar or café, including the 10pm curfew.

Throughout all the uncertainty, the Star Pubs & Bars estate has been collating data to help companies make some predictions for the future. It is hoped that these expectations will help prepare the hospitality industry and encourage pro-active changes before it’s too late.

  1. Consider your audience

If your products cater more specifically to a specific demographic, it may be worth altering the stock to attract other age brackets. For example, Working Men’s Clubs which often have a large amount of Real Ale offerings, may want to consider having cheaper lagers on tap, as younger age groups are more likely to be going out at the minute than OAPs due to the associated risk.

Data is also showing that weekday food outings are down as much as 44% vs this time last year. Again, have your audience in mind and consider adapting your menu or offering weekday deals to attract more customers.

  1. Make your customers feel safe

At the moment, peoples’ first priority is their safety. The more you acknowledge this and show you are doing all you can to make people feel that they are in a safe environment, the better. By adding safety features such as protective screens, regular sanitisation points and ensuring your staff are conscientious, your business will run much more smoothly and customers are likely to feel more secure. Don’t be afraid to show people the lengths you are going to in order to keep them safe. Why not share a series of posts on social media which show your staff wearing appropriate PPE, carrying out cleaning measures or even of customers enjoying their visit while abiding by the guidelines.

  1. Stay positive

Staying present during this period of uncertainty is important for people to see. Showing that you are here for the community and reminding people of the places that mean the most to them is the kind of positive content we need right now. Even if you are having to shut temporarily, why not ask people to share a memory they’ve had in your venue over the years? Showing people that you are still here and are doing all you can to keep your customers safe will have an undeniably positive impact.

There will continue to be uncertainty in the industry, but it is crucial to stay informed and keep a positive mindset. By considering your audience and being open to making adaptations, your chances of riding the wave and making it out of the other side of this pandemic are all the more likely.
